Several people are feared dead after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Elwak Town, situated in Mandera County. Witnesses reported seeing at least five individuals motionless in the aftermath of the incident that occurred on Monday morning, across from a local Administration Police camp.

Law enforcement in the area acknowledged the explosion but lacked specific details regarding the event. Eyewitnesses also recounted heavy gunfire at the targeted residential compound, which accommodates non-local residents, including educators, medical professionals, and law enforcement personnel.

The affected compound stands adjacent to the Elwak Administration Police (AP) camp, intensifying concerns over security in the region. In response to the incident, Equity Bank took precautionary measures by suspending operations at its Elwak branch. However, the bank assured that its staff at the branch were unharmed amidst the turmoil.
