Motorists using Mombasa Road should prepare for substantial traffic disruptions starting Friday, September 20, 2024. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a 33-day traffic alteration to facilitate the construction of a new footbridge foundation.
In a public notice, KeNHA Director General Kung’u Ndung’u confirmed that the disruptions will affect the Nairobi-bound lanes of Mombasa Road, particularly in the vicinity of Syokimau Railway Station. The construction is scheduled from September 20 to October 22, 2024.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority informs the public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) near Syokimau Railway Station will experience traffic disruption along the Nairobi-bound lanes from Friday, September 20, 2024, to Tuesday, October 22, 2024,” the notice stated.
The ongoing construction will involve laying the foundation for a mid-span footbridge in the median between the Nairobi-bound lanes and the Nairobi Expressway fence. This essential infrastructure project is expected to enhance pedestrian safety but will temporarily hinder vehicle movement.
KeNHA has advised drivers to utilize alternative routes during this period. A map detailing these detours has been provided to assist commuters in navigating around the affected area. The authority has also urged motorists to cooperate with traffic officers and marshals present on-site.
“KeNHA urges motorists to adhere to the proposed traffic management plan and work with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the notice emphasized.
Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid delays and congestion. The project aims to improve pedestrian facilities along Mombasa Road and is expected to benefit road users in the long run despite the temporary inconvenience.
