Mwenda Ali, the Deputy Speaker of Meru County, tragically lost one of his children in a devastating accident on the Meru-Embu-Nairobi Highway in Embu County. He narrowly escaped death himself when his vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle and caught fire at the Riagacici area.
Reports indicate that Ali was traveling to Nairobi to visit his hospitalised wife when the accident occurred. A police report by the Embu West Sub-county Traffic office indicates the Njia Ward MCA was being driven in a Subaru Forester.
Upon reaching the said location, his vehicle collided head-on with a Toyota double cabin travelling in the opposite direction. Authorities stated that as a result of the collision, Ali’s six-year-old daughter tragically passed away while receiving medical care at Tenri Hospital Ena, where she had been urgently taken.
“At Riagacici area it happened that one Patrick Gitonga aged 47 years was driving his M/V reg. KCZ 751R Toyota double cab from Embu General direction towards Meru and on reaching the location of the accident left his proper lane hitting an coming Subaru Forester KCX290M head on which was being driven by Michael Mwongera, 35 years old,”read part of the traffic police report.
Police said that the legislator, who was sitting in the front passenger’s seat, sustained a deep cut on the forehead and dislocated left knee. He was also complaining of chest pain.His two-year-old daughter sustained serious internal stomach injuries and both were airlifted to Karen Hospital in Nairobi for specialised treatment.
The driver of the ill-fated car who was driving the legislator and his family, Michael Mwongera, has been admitted to Tenri Hospital.Police have launched investigations into the accident.
