Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has announced that the state will cover the medical expenses of victims affected by the devastating flash floods that struck Mai Mahiu on Monday.
He highlighted the extent of the damage caused by the floods, particularly in Nairobi County, which has seen the largest impact. With 147,000 people displaced, accounting for 77% of the country’s total displaced population, the government has established 52 displacement camps to provide shelter for those affected.
Speaking to the press, Mwaura confirmed that 73 individuals sustained injuries during the calamity and were subsequently admitted to nearby hospitals. He emphasised the government’s commitment to solidarity by ensuring that all hospital bills for the injured will be settled.
The flash floods in Mai Mahiu, triggered by a burst water body on Monday morning, have resulted in a tragic loss of life. As of the latest update, 71 fatalities have been recorded, with 28 individuals still reported missing. The overflow stemmed from a blocked railway line tunnel, hindering the natural flow of water through River Tongi.
Earlier reports from the Ministry of Interior indicated 46 fatalities and 53 missing persons. However, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua revised the figures, confirming that as of Tuesday morning, 71 deaths had been confirmed, leaving 28 individuals still unaccounted for.
The situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive disaster management measures to mitigate such tragedies in the future.
