The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) wants the government through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to streamline issues of teacher promotion and ensure that the teachers who are due for promotion are promoted.
KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori announced on Tuesday that they would initiate a nationwide strike to pressure the TSC into addressing teachers’ promotion issues promptly if their demands are not met soon.
Misori emphasized the prolonged stagnation of many teachers in one job group and stressed the need for the TSC to provide clarity on this matter. He expressed concerns over the demoralization of teachers who have remained in the same job group for several years.
Misori said they noted that names of some of the teachers who were recently promoted by TSC after the parliament approved some funds for teachers’ promotion have either died or retired yet many teachers who are due for promotion have not been promoted.
Amidst ongoing debates surrounding teacher promotions, recent developments reveal a significant setback. Despite the Teacher Service Commission’s promotion of 36,000 teachers, a staggering 123,000 members were excluded due to financial constraints. This decision has sparked discontent within the teaching community.
