KUPPET Secretary General Misori denies betrayal claims over strike suspension

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Secretary General Akelo Misori has refuted claims of betrayal following the decision to call off a teachers’ strike on Monday. Misori emphasized that the decision was not made unilaterally but was a collective one by the union’s executive board after thorough consultations.

Addressing criticism from some KUPPET members who accused him of acting against their interests, Misori labeled the accusations as hypocritical, asserting that the executive council had authorized the negotiations with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

“The decision to call off the strike was not mine alone; it was the outcome of consultations within the executive board,” Misori stated, emphasizing that the strike resolution was a union decision and not his personal mandate.

He further elaborated that during the National Governing Council’s last meeting, county executive members granted the executive board the authority to engage with the TSC and finalize a return-to-work agreement. Misori expressed surprise that the same members who had empowered the board were now criticizing its actions.

Misori explained that the agreement with the TSC addressed several key issues that had initially prompted the strike. He reiterated that the union’s leadership would continue to advocate for the teachers’ rights and pursue their demands until all outstanding matters were fully resolved.

“I urge teachers not to lose hope; we will continue fighting for your rights and ensuring that the union’s demands are met,” Misori said in his appeal to teachers.
