Kenyatta University’s Vice Chancellor, Paul Wainaina, has issued a cautionary statement following reports of fraudulent activities targeting families affected by a recent road accident.
Wainaina emphasized the need for vigilance, warning that unscrupulous individuals were posing as representatives of government agencies and soliciting personal information from grieving families under the pretext of facilitating compensation processing.
He urged families to remain steadfast in coping with the aftermath of the tragedy and assured them of the university’s commitment to adhering to legal procedures and providing necessary updates.
The memorial service for the victims took place at Kenyatta University Graduation Square Grounds on Sunday. The university, grappling with the aftermath of the accident which claimed the lives of 11 students, has appealed for financial assistance to cover medical and funeral expenses.
The tragic incident occurred when a school bus carrying 58 students collided with a trailer in Maungu, Voi, as the group was en route to Mombasa for an academic excursion.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu expressed profound sorrow over the incident, emphasizing its impact not only on Kenyatta University but on the wider educational community. President William Ruto demonstrated support by donating Sh2 million towards the students’ farewell arrangements.
The contribution was presented by First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto during her attendance at the memorial service. Mama Rachel, herself an alumna of Kenyatta University, expressed deep sadness over the loss of the students and underscored the importance of solidarity during this challenging time.
