Principal Secretary for Higher Education, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, has strongly defended the newly introduced university funding model, emphasizing its benefits for Kenyan parents and students.
Speaking at an event in Shinyalu, Kakamega County, Dr. Inyangala described the model as the most favorable option for families seeking higher education for their children.
“The government is standing with its people, supporting them, and meeting them at their various levels of need,” Dr. Inyangala stated. She highlighted that the new model significantly reduces the financial burden on families, with the government covering up to 80% of the tuition fees.
This means that families will only need to contribute between 5% and 40% of the program’s cost, depending on their financial capability.
“I can assure you that some families will pay as little as KES 3,000 in school fees per semester for their children in university,” she said, dispelling concerns that the new model would make university education unaffordable.
Dr. Inyangala also addressed fears about rising costs, assuring the public that the government has not increased the cost of university programs.
“There is absolutely no reason why any child should be unable to access university education or participate in any program,” she affirmed.
In addition to the government’s substantial contribution, Dr. Inyangala noted that the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) would provide further financial support to cover the remaining 20% that families are responsible for.
