The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) of Kenya has issued a public notice requiring all sugar packers to register with the authority by October 10th, 2024, as part of efforts to enhance traceability and quality monitoring in the retail sector.

According to the notice signed by Dr. Bruno Linyiru, Director General of AFA, the registration requirement is implemented under the Provisions of the Crops Act No. 16 of 2013. Sugar packers must submit their details using Form (9), titled “Application for Registration of Sugar Repackaging,” which can be accessed on the AFA website.

“All sugar packers are therefore required to provide their details… and submit the same to AFA – Sugar Directorate,” states the public notice.

The registration process requires several supporting documents, including:

The initiative aims to strengthen oversight of sugar quality at retail outlets across the country. This move comes as part of AFA’s broader mandate to regulate and monitor agricultural products in Kenya.

The notice, issued from AFA’s headquarters at Tea House on Naivasha Road, Off Ngong Road in Nairobi, provides clear contact information for sugar packers seeking clarification. Interested parties can reach the authority through the provided telephone numbers or email address.

This registration requirement affects all businesses involved in sugar repackaging operations within Kenya. The October deadline gives sugar packers approximately one year to comply with the new regulations.

Sugar packers seeking more information can visit the AFA website at www.afa.go.ke or contact the authority directly through the provided communication channels. The implementation of this registration system represents a significant step in the authority’s efforts to standardize and monitor sugar packaging operations across the country.
