Kenya Red Cross issues safety guidelines amid heavy rains and flooding crisis

The Kenya Red Cross has issued safety guidelines regarding flooding amidst heavy rains in Nairobi. They advise individuals to be cautious of flash floods and to evacuate promptly if they perceive any imminent danger.

The humanitarian organization recommends refraining from walking or driving through floodwaters, as it exposes individuals to the risk of being swept away by the moving water. They highlight that just six inches of moving water can knock someone down, while one foot of moving water is sufficient to carry away a vehicle.

Moreover, the organization warns against engaging in activities near streams and rivers during intense rainfall, as this increases the risk of being swept away by floods caused by runoff.

To assess the depth of flooded areas, it is recommended to use a stick before attempting to navigate through them. Additionally, the Red Cross advises individuals to switch off electricity from the main switch if their house is flooded, to prevent incidents of electrocution.
