The Government of Kenya has called for urgent regional and international intervention in Sudan’s escalating humanitarian crisis, which has left an estimated 11 million people displaced.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign & Diaspora Affairs, Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, expressed deep concern over the prolonged conflict in Sudan, now in its 22nd month. “The conflict in Sudan, which has dragged on for twenty-two months now, continues to devastate a nation that, just four years ago, was on a positive trajectory of stability, democracy, and prosperity for its people,” the statement read.
Kenya emphasized the crisis’ far-reaching impact on neighboring nations, including its own, as they struggle to manage a growing refugee crisis with already overstretched humanitarian resources. “The regional impact of the crisis is profound, with the neighboring countries including Kenya, bearing the responsibility of managing the refugee crisis with already overstretched humanitarian infrastructure,” the statement noted.
Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to peace efforts, pledging $2 million towards global and regional initiatives to alleviate the humanitarian crisis. The country also reiterated its role in facilitating diplomatic dialogue, having previously hosted peace agreements such as the Machakos Protocol of 2002.
Furthermore, Kenya aligned itself with the African Union (AU) Charter on the Unconstitutional Change of Government and reaffirmed its support for Sudan’s return to civilian rule. “Kenya aligns with the African Union (AU) Charter on the Unconstitutional Change of Government and the 27th October 2021 AU decision suspending Sudan from all activities of the AU,” the statement affirmed.
With Sudanese stakeholders engaging in peace discussions earlier this year, Kenya expressed hope for a swift resolution. “Kenya is confident that the Sudanese people will find a quick solution to the current situation, and in a manner that safeguards its security and that of the region,” the statement concluded.
Kenya pledged continued diplomatic engagement through regional mechanisms such as IGAD and the AU to support Sudan’s path toward stability and prosperity
