How to apply for a passport in Kenya: A complete guide

The Government of Kenya issues ePassports that are valid for 10 years, in compliance with ICAO document 9303 and the East African Community Summit resolution. The process is managed through the eCitizen platform, allowing Kenyan citizens to apply online for a passport.

Types of Kenyan Passports and Fees

Before starting the application, it’s essential to understand the various passport types available and the fees associated with each:

Ordinary Passports

  1. A Series (34 Pages): KES 7,550
  2. B Series (50 Pages): KES 9,550
  3. C Series (66 Pages): KES 12,050

Diplomatic Passports

  • Diplomatic Passport: KES 15,050

Other Services

  1. Mutilated Passport Replacement: KES 20,050
  2. Lost Passport Replacement: KES 20,050
  3. Certificate of Identity (For Foreigners): KES 3,050
  4. Temporary Permit: KES 1,050
  5. Interstate Pass (EAC): Gratis

Requirements for Passport Applications

The following documents are necessary for various types of passport applications:

New (First-Time) Applicants

  • Form 19: Duly filled.
  • Original Birth Certificate: Plus a copy for citizens by birth.
  • Original National ID: Plus a copy for adults.
  • Consent Form: For minors.
  • Parent’s IDs or Death Certificates: Where applicable.
  • Payment Invoices.

Passport Replacements

  • Form 19 and 2 payment invoices.
  • Original National ID and a copy for adults.
  • Consent Form for minors.
  • Previous Passport and a copy.

Mutilated Passport Replacement

  • Form 19, payment invoices, and the previous passport.
  • Sworn Affidavit and Personal Statement explaining the damage.
  • Original National ID and a copy.

Lost Passport Replacement

  • Form 19, invoices, and previous passport copy if available.
  • Police Abstract for the loss.
  • Sworn Affidavit and Personal Statement explaining the loss.
  • ID copy for adults.

Change of Names

  • Form 19, invoices, and supporting documents such as a deed poll, Kenya Gazette notice, marriage certificate, or other applicable documents.

How to Apply for a Passport in Kenya

The Kenyan passport application process is fully digital, requiring applicants to use the eCitizen portal.

Step 1: Register for an eCitizen Account

If you don’t already have an eCitizen account, you will need to create one.

Step 2: Fill Out the Online Application

Log in to your eCitizen account and navigate to the Immigration section. Fill in your details on Form 19, upload the necessary documents, and ensure everything is accurate.

Step 3: Pay the Prescribed Fee

Payments are made through eCitizen using mobile money platforms like M-Pesa or through bank transfers.

Step 4: Book an Appointment

Once the payment is completed, book an appointment to visit one of the designated passport application centers for biometrics capture.

Step 5: Attend Biometrics Capture

On your appointment date, attend the biometrics capture session. Ensure you have the printed invoices, application form, and original documents with you.

Passport Collection

How to Know When Your Passport is Ready

Once the passport is ready, you will receive a notification through your eCitizen account. You can then proceed to the collection point where you submitted your application.

Requirements for Collection

  • Invoice
  • Original ID
  • Previous Passport (for replacement cases)
  • Original Birth Certificate (for minors)

Temporary Permit Application

The Temporary Permit is a one-year travel document for Kenyans traveling within East Africa. The application steps are similar to the passport process:

Requirements for Temporary Permit

  • Original National ID and a copy for adults.
  • Birth Certificate and a copy for minors.
  • Two Passport Size Photos.
  • Payment Invoices.

How to Apply for a Temporary Permit

  1. Register on eCitizen.
  2. Complete the online application.
  3. Pay the required fee and print the completed form and invoices.
  4. Submit the documents at the nearest immigration office or point of entry.

Interstate Pass

The Interstate Pass allows travel to Uganda and Rwanda. It is applied for through the eCitizen portal and can be downloaded once issued.

Requirements for Interstate Pass

  • Original ID or Alien Certificate.
  • Birth Certificate (for minors).
  • Consent Form (for minors).
  • The Interstate Pass is free of charge.
