Newly appointed Deputy President Kithure Kindiki took the oath of office, promising unwavering support to President William Ruto and highlighting his journey from humble beginnings to the second-highest office in the East African nation.
In his inaugural address, Kindiki, 52, emphasized Kenya’s role as a land of opportunity, drawing from his personal narrative of rising from one of the country’s most remote regions to its apex of political leadership. “Kenya is the homeland of possibilities… today, I, perhaps the most unlikely person, am standing here because Kenya has made it possible for anybody to become anything in this country,” he said.
The former Interior Minister, who has been President Ruto’s political student for two decades, committed to advancing the administration’s transformation agenda. “I promise you before this congregation and before God that I will not let you down for the privilege given me,” Kindiki declared, addressing President Ruto directly.
Kindiki’s elevation to the deputy presidency follows his tenure at the Interior Ministry, where he oversaw critical security functions including police, prisons, and immigration services. In his speech, he acknowledged the ministry’s achievements while taking personal responsibility for any shortcomings during his leadership.
The new deputy president paid tribute to his support system, particularly highlighting the role of his wife Joyce, a professional who “sacrificed to raise our three children” during his 15-year political career. Prior to entering politics, Kindiki spent a decade in academia, bringing a blend of scholarly and administrative experience to his new role.
His appointment has been seen as reinforcing President Ruto’s commitment to inclusive governance. “I want to commit to support and assist you together with other colleagues in government to realize a Kenya that has even greater opportunities, a more inclusive Kenya, a more democratic Kenya and a more transformed Kenya,” Kindiki stated.
The deputy president emphasized his commitment to collaboration with other government officials, stating his intention to “provide continuity so that we can be able to all work together and deliver for this country.” This approach aligns with the administration’s focus on coordinated governance and service delivery.
Looking ahead, the new deputy president outlined his vision for supporting President Ruto’s agenda, promising to “be loyal and faithful” and to work diligently alongside colleagues to “lighten the burden” carried by the president.
