The government is poised to introduce a novel technology aimed at monitoring drivers as part of its endeavours to mitigate the frequency of road accidents in Kenya. Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen affirmed the government’s unwavering dedication to incorporating advanced technology to address challenges within the transportation industry.

During his address at OLC Mugoiri Girls High School in Muranga County, the Cabinet Secretary stated that all school buses and other vehicles will need to install Vehicular Telematics to decrease accidents. Murkomen emphasized the implementation of technology following an accident in Londiani, highlighting the initiative to equip vehicles, starting with school buses, with Vehicular Telematics.

The CS revealed that the team concerned is finalising the standards including that of Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to develop the right telematics for vehicles in the country. “When we finish these standards, I will be giving directions together with Education CS on how all the schools will be required  to install vehicular telematics in their buses,” he stated.

He went on to explain that trucks were previously responsible for numerous accidents in Kenya until companies and transporters began implementing vehicular telematics. He noted that with this technology, transporters can effectively monitor their drivers’ activities, extending from Mombasa to Malaba and even Kampala, utilising features such as cameras.

He noted that the ministry is collaborating with Safaricom to create cost-effective technology accessible to schools. Murkomen mentioned that school principals will designate an individual responsible for monitoring drivers and overseeing activities on school buses during trips.

The announcement arrives amidst a rise in road accidents, notably those involving school buses. Recently, a Chavakali Boys High School student lost their life in a road accident in Kisumu, while 11 Kenyatta University students perished following a collision between their bus and a trailer in Maungu on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway on March 18, 2024. Additionally, a road accident involving a Moi University school bus occurred, carrying 65 students.
