Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, has declared Friday, May 10, 2024, a national public holiday dedicated to countrywide tree-growing activities.

In a gazette notice, Kindiki acknowledged the existential threat posed by climate change to national security, public safety, and the ecological sustainability of the country.

The declaration comes as Kenya grapples with the severe impacts of cyclic floods and subsequent droughts, which have adversely affected the lives and livelihoods of citizens across the nation.

“Recognizing that the effects of climate change pose an existential threat to national security, public safety, and the ecological sustainability of Kenya, we stand in solidarity with all persons adversely affected by cyclic floods and subsequent droughts in recent times,” Kindiki stated in the gazette notice.
