The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a notice regarding the closure of the Nairobi-Garissa (A3) Road. This decision comes in response to flooding in the Arer Area, situated between Bangaley and Madogo.
The closure is attributed to heavy rainfall experienced on Monday night, leading to elevated water levels along the entire route. KeNHA stated that the flooding has impacted the road’s integrity, rendering the previously established diversion unusable.
“This poses a high safety risk to the road users. This road, therefore, shall remain closed until the flood waters subside and the damaged section is reinstated,” KeNHA said.
KeNHA has assured that their personnel are present at the location, prepared to address any damage caused by the flooding once the water recedes. They emphasised the importance of exercising caution and advised motorists to refrain from driving through flooded areas for their own safety.
Additionally, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) cautioned road users about the risky conditions arising from the heavy rainfall affecting various parts of the country. In a statement released on Saturday, NTSA Director General George Njao emphasised the need for increased caution, urging the public to be extra-vigilant, courteous, and mindful of safety measures.
NTSA also cautioned motorists about the accumulation of dirt, soil, and oil deposits on roads due to increased rainfall following a period of dry weather. “With increased rainfall, the Authority cautions road users that after the recent dry weather there is an accumulation of dirt, soil, and oil deposits,” read the statement.
The NTSA suggested several precautionary measures, including the timely removal of stalled vehicles, maintaining a safe following distance from other vehicles, and activating headlights for improved visibility. Furthermore, drivers were advised to drive at a reduced speed after traversing through water to enable brakes to dry adequately, and to keep both hands on the steering wheel to maintain control.
For pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, the NTSA recommended wearing brightly colored clothing or reflective vests to enhance their visibility while on the roads.
