As strategies to combat female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages are being implemented in 21 counties, Kajiado East MP Kakuta Maimai has called for heightened vigilance during the school holidays. Speaking at the commissioning of a new classroom in Kajiado County, Maimai highlighted the increased risk that girls face during this period.
“School holidays are a time when many girls are at a higher risk of being subjected to FGM and early marriages,” Maimai said. “Mothers, please be keen. Take care of our girls because they are our leaders, and we have so much hope in them.”
The MP’s remarks underscore the importance of community awareness and parental responsibility in protecting girls from these harmful practices. Despite ongoing efforts and significant progress in the Maasai community to eradicate FGM and promote education for both boys and girls, the holiday season remains a critical time for vigilance.
Maimai praised the Maasai community for its strides in valuing education for all children. “I want to appreciate my Maasai community as you have decided to educate both boys and girls,” he said, acknowledging the community’s commitment to gender equality in education.
The MP’s call to action emphasizes the role of parents in safeguarding their children’s futures. “Parents are urged to ensure they are aware of their children’s whereabouts at all times.
Maimai’s message serves as a crucial reminder of the need for continuous vigilance and collective action especially as the school holidays are fast approaching.
