Whistleblower in Adani deal fears for safety after DCI probe

Whistleblower Nelson Amenya, has expressed concerns for his safety following his exposé on the controversial Adani JKIA deal, which implicated high-profile individuals, including Jayesh Saini and Senator Aaron Cheruiyot. Amenya, who recently received a letter from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), suspects that the actions are attempts to silence him.

On September 6, 2024, Amenya’s company, Afrinet Carbon Limited, received an official letter from Michael K. Sang, head of the Serious Crimes Unit at the DCI. The letter requested detailed information on the company’s operations, including certified copies of their Articles of Association and details of the directors, as part of an ongoing investigation into computer fraud. Amenya, however, suspects that the investigation is a direct response to his efforts to expose corruption.

In a social media post, Amenya highlighted the involvement of Jayesh Saini, a businessman linked to multiple medical institutions including Nairobi West Hospital, Bliss Hospitals, Lifecare, and Medicross.

Saini, according to Amenya, is a key player in an annual Ksh30 billion medical insurance scandal involving various government bodies, including the National Police Service (NPS), Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and county governments.

Amenya voiced his suspicion that those implicated in the Adani deal and the medical insurance schemes are now targeting him. “I have received credible information that they have labeled me an enemy of the state and are looking for ways to arrest me,” he stated.

Despite the threats, Amenya remains defiant, vowing to continue his fight for economic freedom and social justice. “Even if you misuse our security apparatus to intimidate me, I shall not be cowed by these old-fashioned tactics to silence patriotic citizens,” he said.
