Isiolo wildfire: Elders call for aircraft support to contain blaze

Elders and human rights activists in Isiolo County are calling on the government to intervene urgently to contain a wildfire that has been burning for three days. The fire, which started in Merti Sub County, has already destroyed over ten square kilometers of vital grazing land, severely affecting the local community.

Mohamed Konso, Chairperson of the Borana Council of Elders, raised alarm over the blaze’s devastating impact. “If this fire is not contained soon, it could lead to widespread livestock deaths and the destruction of homes and institutions,” Konso warned. He, alongside other local leaders, emphasized the critical need for immediate action by both national and county governments to prevent further devastation.

The wildfire is rapidly spreading across important grazing areas in Matarba, Korbesa, and Malkagalla, and is now advancing towards Iresaboru, Badana, and Sericho. Local leaders fear that the fire could soon reach residential areas, endangering homes and community infrastructure. Despite the fire burning for more than 72 hours, no government assistance has been provided so far.

The cause of the fire remains unclear, though local leaders speculate that it may have been accidental. Abdullahi Hajj Gonjobe, a Borana elder, suggested that the fire could have been sparked by herders preparing meals in the bushes. “It’s possible that the fire was left unattended,” he said, also noting that herders often harvest wild honey in the same areas, which might have contributed to the blaze.

The fire has already destroyed significant portions of pasture, which could have sustained both livestock and wildlife for up to two years. “The long-term effects of this fire are devastating for our livelihoods,” Konso added. Efforts by residents to control the fire have been unsuccessful due to the lack of adequate firefighting equipment.

The elders have called for the deployment of an aircraft to assist in containing the fire and mitigating its impact on the community.
