The International Rescue Committee (IRC), the LEGO Foundation, and the Grundfos Foundation have unveiled TeachWell, an innovative Teacher Professional Development program designed to support educators in both refugee and host communities in Kenya.
The initiative adopts a groundbreaking ‘learning through play’ methodology, aligning with Kenya’s recently implemented Competence Based Curriculum.
“Expanding on the successes of the PlayMatters and Play Well programs in Uganda, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, we are thrilled to extend our partnership with the LEGO Foundation into Kenya. With the added support from the Grundfos Foundation, we are taking a significant stride in addressing the educational needs of refugee children in the region. TeachWell represents not only an advancement in educational methods but a complete reinvention of the learning experience for children, incorporating proven practices with innovative approaches,” stated David Miliband, President, and CEO of the IRC.
The LEGO Foundation’s commitment to improving mental health and psychosocial support within Kenya’s education system through TeachWell aligns with global initiatives such as the Global Refugee Forum and the Global Compact for Refugee outcomes. The initiative’s foundation lies in learning through play, supported by evidence showcasing its efficacy in enhancing socio-emotional skills and overall well-being, especially for children facing adversity.
Kim Nøhr Skibsted, CEO of the Grundfos Foundation, underscores the vital role of water, sanitation, and resilience-building in ensuring educational success. Acknowledging the significance of clean water access and facilities that fortify schools during emergencies, the Foundation strives to create conducive learning spaces that unlock the potential of every child.
Led by the IRC, TeachWell also involves collaboration with other organizations, including RTI International for design and teacher training, the Lutheran World Federation for school and community outreach, and the African Population and Health Research Center for crucial research insights. Film-Aid Kenya leads community engagement, and a health partner will integrate playful and child-focused care in healthcare settings.
