Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has requested that the National Police Service to investigate possible acts of sabotage and coverup that may have led to a power outage at terminals 1A and 1E at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Sunday.

According to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), JKIA was among the important infrastructures impacted by the third blackout in three months, as the backup generators did not start.

In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, CS Murkomen said the KAA Board is under strict instructions to carry on with the reform agenda and the management to implement, as directed, the report of the technical committee that was recently constituted.

“As you may be aware, there have been problems with JKIA, which we have been addressing progressively. Considering the frequency of the power disruption and considering the fact that JKIA is a facility of strategic national importance,” Murkomen twitted.

His remarks came after some sections of the airport experienced a blackout after the backup generators failed to start immediately after power outage.

“A power outage was experienced in many parts of the country tonight. A changeover to the standby generators ensured power was immediately restored to most parts of JKIA. Regrettably, supply did not immediately resume at terminals 1A and 1E.”
