Inspector General denies attending political rally in Nyeri

The National Police Service (NPS) has strongly refuted allegations that Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja attended a political rally in Kieni, Nyeri County. The claims, made by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), were addressed in a press statement issued on April 3, 2025.

In the statement, the NPS reaffirmed the IG’s commitment to impartiality, dismissing the allegations as misleading. “At no time has the IG engaged in activities that could undermine the neutrality of his office,” the statement read.

According to the NPS, Kanja’s presence in Nyeri was solely for official duties, specifically overseeing security arrangements during the President’s development tour. “The IG’s presence in Nyeri was strictly in line with his official duties, including oversight of security arrangements during the President’s development tour,” the statement clarified.

The Presidential Escort Unit (PEU), which operates under the Inspector General’s direction, is legally mandated to protect the President and other designated VIPs.

The statement further detailed Kanja’s ongoing operational tour across several counties, including Baringo, Samburu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Laikipia, and Meru. His focus has been on “impromptu inspections of police stations, welfare, mental health, financial prudence for officers, and encouraging the enhancement of ICT skills.”

Earlier in the tour, the IG and the Cabinet Secretary for Interior assessed security progress in Loruk (Baringo) and Kirimon (Laikipia), commending officers for their efforts in bandit-prone areas.

The NPS urged the public to “disregard the misleading assertions,” emphasizing its apolitical stance and commitment to law and order.
