The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has expressed shock and sorrow following the murder of Ms. Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, Acting County Elections Manager for Kilifi. The tragic incident occurred on the night of January 4th, 2025, at her home in Utange, Kisauni Constituency, Mombasa County. Ms. Aisha was attacked alongside her son, who sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.

In a statement issued on Monday, IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan described Ms. Aisha as “a well-trained officer who performed all her duties with utmost honesty, integrity, and dedication.” He extended condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues, assuring them of the Commission’s support during this period of mourning.

The IEBC has condemned the attack in the strongest terms, calling on security agencies to expedite investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice. “We are deeply concerned by this horrendous incident,” the statement read, adding, “We call on the country’s security agencies to speedily investigate this heinous occurrence and apprehend her killers.”

Ms. Aisha joined the IEBC in 2012 as a Constituency Elections Coordinator for Nyali before her deployment to Kilifi South. Over her career, she rose through the ranks to hold the position of Acting County Elections Manager for Kilifi.
