How To Access The Government’s E-citizen Digital Payment Platform

The eCitizen-based Digital Payments Platform was launched by the Kenyan government. Kenyans will be able to pay for all government services online through this payment channel.

The new service has been connected with all Kenyan electronic payment systems already in use, including mobile money services like M-PESA, T-Kash, and Airtel Money.

The National Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u stated that all payments for government services must be done through eCitizen.go.ke in a gazette notice dated December 20, 2022.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that pursuant to the principle of openness and accountability stipulated in Article 201 (a) of the Constitution of Kenya, guiding the public finance management and Article 6 (3) providing for the widest possible access to government services, the government has developed the eCitizen.go.ke Digital Payments platform through which citizens and all persons will be able to pay for government services,” Ndungu said.

What You Need To Know

  • eCitizen is fully owned by the Kenyan Government.
  • It can be accessed through ecitizen.go.ke, which has now been designated as the official Government Digital Payments portal.
  • National ID cards serve as the platform’s unique identifier. Foreigners will use their foreign IDs.
  • The official registration number is used by businesses, institutions, and organizations.
  • The number 222222 is the official Kenya Government Pay Bill number.
  • The official short code for the Kenyan government is 222.
  • Finally, the official Government of Kenya USSD number is 2222.

This comes as the government plans to offer 5,000 Online Services In The Next Six Months.

According to ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, the National Government plans to offer 5,000 government services through technological platforms in the upcoming six months.

Owalo stated during the launch of free WiFi, at Ahero Market, On Wednesday, December 28, 2022, that the government wanted to discourage individuals from traveling great distances to seek out services at government offices.

Owalo stated that the first stage is to provide internet access for the entire country, which will serve as an anchor for providing government services.
