The government is set to establish the Endowment Fund to support the families of security officers who lose their lives in the line of duty.

Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki announced that he has received the policy guidelines for the operationalization of the fund, which will be managed by the beneficiaries themselves.

Speaking during the National Commemorative Service for the fallen heroes and heroines on Thursday, Kindiki also stated that plans are underway to absorb qualified widows and widowers of the departed officers into the public service in an effort to alleviate the bereaved families’ financial burden.

The event, which is observed annually, was held at the National Police Training College, Embakasi.

Kindiki disclosed that 37 officers had lost their lives between November 22, 2022, and November 23, 2023.

They included two from the Kenya Prisons Service, one from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), 10 from the Administration Police Service, and 24 from the Kenya Police Service.

Endowment funds are investments made with the intention of using the accumulated profits to provide grants for both short- and long-term development projects.
