Google ending Gmailify and POP3 support in January 2026 may reduce spam protection for Yahoo AOL and Outlook users

Changes to Gmail email handling may prompt users to set up forwarding to retain filtering and security

Google is set to retire Gmailify and POP3 support in January 2026, a move that will affect users who manage Yahoo AOL and Outlook accounts through Gmail. The discontinuation means Gmail will no longer automatically provide its advanced spam protection and inbox organisation to these third party accounts. Users who want to continue benefiting from Gmail’s filtering and security will need to enable email forwarding directly from their external accounts into Gmail.

Gmailify is a feature that allows Gmail to apply its advanced tools including spam filtering inbox categories and notifications to external email accounts without users having to abandon their original email addresses. Google has confirmed that support for Gmailify will end in January 2026 alongside the Check mail from other accounts feature that relies on the POP3 protocol.

In a product update issued in October 2025, Google said it was retiring older email technologies in favor of more secure and modern standards. The company noted that POP3 lacks key security features and does not align with current safety requirements. “We are focusing on providing the most secure and reliable ways for users to access their messages,” Google said in its update.

The move has raised concerns among users who rely on Gmail as a central hub for managing multiple email accounts. Gmail’s spam detection and phishing filters have long been regarded as among the most effective in the industry. Through Gmailify these protections extended to third party email services. Once the feature is discontinued new emails pulled from Yahoo AOL or Outlook will no longer automatically benefit from Gmail’s filtering in the same way.

Cybersecurity analysts warn that this could expose some users to increased spam and phishing attempts particularly those with older email addresses that are more widely circulated. Without Gmailify or POP3 fetching Gmail will no longer automatically screen incoming messages from external providers before they reach users.

To address this Google has advised users to set up automatic email forwarding from their third party accounts into Gmail. By enabling forwarding directly within Yahoo AOL or Outlook settings all incoming messages are sent to Gmail where they can still be scanned using Gmail’s spam filters. Google has said this is the safest way to continue using Gmail as a primary inbox after January 2026.

Another option available to users is configuring external accounts through IMAP using the Gmail app or other email clients. While this allows users to send and receive messages from different providers in one interface some Gmail specific features including full spam categorisation may not apply.

As the January 2026 deadline approaches users are being encouraged to review their email settings and take action early. Those who fail to adjust their setup may notice an increase in unwanted or potentially harmful messages.
