Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson has unveiled a new initiative aimed at providing free education and skills training for vulnerable families in the county. The program, announced on Monday, seeks to enhance employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for residents who may lack access to traditional educational resources.

“This is an opportunity for everyone. If you are a Nairobi resident from a vulnerable family, this initiative could be your chance to learn a new trade,” Sakaja stated, emphasizing the initiative’s inclusive approach.

The program is a collaborative effort with several local colleges, offering a range of short courses tailored to meet the needs of the community. Brian Mulama, the County Executive for Talent, Skills Development, and Care, discussed the program’s significance, saying, “Under Governor Sakaja’s leadership, we are committed to equipping our youth with essential skills. Hundreds dream of opportunities like this but lack the funds—this is their chance.”

Courses available through the initiative include catering, graphic design, electrical installation, plumbing, computer skills, carpentry, digital marketing, and beauty and hairdressing. This diverse selection aims to provide participants with practical skills that can directly contribute to their economic independence.

Residents interested in participating in the program can register online via the Social Services Department’s link at freeacademy.iyfkenya.org. Social Services Chief Officer Boniface Nyamu highlighted the ease of access to registration, encouraging eligible individuals to take advantage of this opportunity.

The registration deadline is set for Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at 5 p.m. Selected applicants will attend training sessions at various colleges across Nairobi, gaining hands-on experience in their chosen fields.
