Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua announced on March 8 that Kenya will export 40 to 50 tonnes of sheep meat per day, with a monthly worth of Ksh.772 million.

The CS made the announcement following discussions with Dr. Jafar Barmaki, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ambassador to Nairobi.

Trade, development, and cooperation between Iran and Kenya were the main topics of discussion at the meeting.

“On trade, it was agreed that Kenya will export 40 to 50 tonnes of sheep and meat per day to Iran with an estimated export value of Ksh772 million per month. Further, we agreed on Kenya exporting 10,000 tonnes of onions to Iran in addition to tea,” he said.

Dr. Mutua stated that his ministry will remove the red tape that led the Iranian government to withhold Ksh40 million intended for university research in nanotechnology.

The CS also praised the project of the Iran House of Innovation and Technology (IHIT) Center, having aided the growth of Kenyan startups. He stated that topics discussed included the potential for a visa-free system between Iran and Kenya as well as scholarships for Kenyans to study there.

In November last year, Barmaki paid a courtesy call to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to discuss other potential collaborations. Barmaki placed emphasis on a proper financial system between Iran and Kenya to facilitate trade between the two countries.

He praised Kenya for preserving the integrity of a free state to advance human development despite the Iranian government being subject to sanctions while he was in the country for the past three years.

He also praised Kenyans for holding peaceful elections on August 9 and declared that the nation’s democracy had reached an advanced age.

The envoy said that there needed to be direct commerce in several agricultural sectors so that Kenyan tea could be exported to Iran. Barmaki added that there are over 40 Iranian businesses with cutting-edge technology that are prepared and eager to make investments in the Country.
