Fay’s Bistro closed by NEMA for noise violations

The Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, has ordered the immediate closure of Fay’s Bistro, a popular entertainment venue in Kilimani, Nairobi, citing noise pollution concerns. The directive was executed in collaboration with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and its enforcement officers.

In a statement posted on X, Mr. Duale emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining peace in residential areas. “Let this serve as a stern warning to all clubs operating in residential areas. Any that continue to play loud music will face the same action. This impunity will not be tolerated,” he declared.

Fay’s Bistro, located on Ring Road in Kilimani, had reportedly received multiple noise complaints from the public. NEMA confirmed that despite being issued several warnings, the establishment had failed to comply with regulations. Consequently, the decision to shut down the bistro was made.

NEMA reiterated its mandate to address noise pollution, particularly in residential areas, stating that any other establishments found violating these regulations would face similar consequences. “We are not against businesses, but public health and tranquility in residential zones must be prioritized,” a NEMA representative explained.

Residents of Kilimani expressed relief following the closure of Fay’s Bistro. One resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, said, “The noise from the bistro had become unbearable. We’ve raised our concerns several times, and it’s reassuring that the authorities are finally taking action.”

Fay’s Bistro is among a growing list of establishments targeted for noise pollution across Nairobi. The government has underscored the need for businesses to adhere to environmental laws, particularly in areas zoned for residential purposes.

NEMA has urged business owners to invest in soundproofing measures to prevent further shutdowns and ensure compliance with noise regulations.
