The 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results have been officially released, with Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirming a record 962,512 candidates who sat for the national exams. This marks a significant 7.19% increase from the 899,453 candidates recorded in 2023, making this year’s cohort the largest since 2020. Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO David Njegere highlighted the milestone, noting that it reflects the ongoing success of policies aimed at expanding access to education.

In his remarks, Ogamba acknowledged the mixed performance trends, stating, “Seventeen subjects, including Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, showed notable improvements, while ten others, such as English and Home Science, recorded declines.” He added that this year’s results underscore both the challenges and resilience demonstrated by students and educators amid a changing curriculum landscape.

Candidates can access their results exclusively online via the KNEC portal at results.knec.ac.ke. To retrieve their results, students must enter their index numbers and registered names. Ogamba emphasized the importance of accuracy during this process, saying, “Any discrepancies, such as incorrect names or grades, must be reported to KNEC within a month of the results announcement.” Official result slips will be sent to the schools where candidates sat for the exams.

Unlike previous years, the SMS service for accessing results has been discontinued. This change was first announced in 2023 by former Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, following widespread complaints about errors and inefficiencies. Machogu, while addressing Parliament, explained, “The move was a response to issues caused by a contracted service provider managing the QR code system. Moving forward, we are working with ICT experts to develop a more reliable and free-to-access online portal.”

Ogamba assured the public of the government’s commitment to transparency and modernization in the education sector. “The school portals remain the most reliable source, as the Ministry of Education transmits results directly to them for schools, parents, and students to access,” he said.
