The Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court has issued a directive for the former Mandera South MP, Adan Haji Ali Sheikh, who is currently evading arrest, to present himself before the court and respond to corruption allegations.
The court order stems from charges filed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), accusing the ex-MP of engaging in corrupt activities amounting to KES 51.4 million during his tenure as the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Tourism in the County Government of Kwale from 2013 to 2017.
The accused allegedly utilized his establishment, Lotfa Resort Diani Limited, as a conduit for transactions with the County Government.
The hotel, overseen by the suspect’s wife and son as Directors, allegedly provided accommodation and conference services to the County Government at inflated costs.
Furthermore, it is alleged that the suspect failed to disclose his personal interests during the tendering and award processes, thus violating regulations and entering into a conflict of interest, as per legal stipulations.
The former MP, who has been on the run since December 2023, following the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) endorsement of the EACC’s recommendations, is now being pursued for arrest and prosecution under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act of 2003. Despite efforts to locate him, the suspect remains in hiding.
To address these charges, the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court has scheduled a hearing for February 13, 2024, and has summoned the accused to appear before the court on that date.
The ongoing manhunt aims to bring the fugitive to justice and address the alleged corrupt practices that took place during his tenure in the County Government of Kwale.
