The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has issued an apology over the power outage experienced at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport( JKIA) at terminals 1A and IE on Sunday.

In a statement released by the authority, the blackout experienced at the airport was a result of the failure of two generators to immediately activate after the nation-wide power outage.

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) linked the nationwide blackout that resulted in the outage at the airport to a “suspected fault affecting the power system.”

“Over the past week, our generator system at JKIA has undergone rigorous testing to ensure a continuous and reliable supply of power. Despite these efforts, during tonight’s power outage, two of our four generators, especially those in terminals 1A and 1E, failed to immediately activate,” the statement read in part.

The authority asserted that the rest of the airport, including the JKIA tower and runway, remained fully operational and was not impacted by the incident.

On the other hand, the Kenya Power and Lighting Company confirmed on Monday at 2:10 a.m. that power had been restored in the whole of Mt. Kenya, South Nyanza, Western, Central Rift, North Rift, North Eastern, and some parts of Nairobi.

“Restoration of power in parts of Nairobi and the Coast region is ongoing,” KPLC said.
