Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has announced the government’s plans to launch nationwide roadshows aimed at raising awareness of overseas job opportunities.
Speaking after a meeting with the International Labour Organization (ILO) on September 10, 2024, Mutua highlighted the importance of informing Kenyans, especially those in rural areas, about employment prospects abroad.
Mutua revealed that the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection is also focused on ratifying key international labor conventions on decent work, child labor, child trafficking, and labor migration. These efforts align with the government’s broader strategy to provide safe, regulated, and rewarding employment for Kenyans in foreign countries.
“We are committed to launching these roadshows across the country to ensure that more Kenyans are aware of overseas job opportunities. Our goal is to partner with recruitment agencies and ensure fair labor practices for all workers,” said Mutua.
During the meeting, ILO Country Director Caroline Mugalla Khamati praised Kenya’s dedication to maintaining global labor standards. The ILO pledged to support Kenya’s efforts to create decent work environments for citizens employed overseas, including additional support for expectant mothers working abroad.
Mutua further explained the government’s goal to educate Kenyan workers about their rights and work conditions. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and the ILO to safeguard workers’ welfare and improve labor migration policies.
“The ILO will continue to work closely with Kenya to strengthen the National Labour Board and protect the rights of our workers abroad,” Mutua added.
