Constitutional shift sees Kindiki replace Gachagua as UDA’s Deputy Leader

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has officially appointed  Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki, as the party’s new Deputy Leader. The decision was made during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday, marking a pivotal moment for the ruling party.

UDA National Chairperson Cecily Mbarire confirmed the leadership transition, citing constitutional and procedural requirements as the driving force behind the decision. “With recent legislative resolutions in the National Assembly, a Senate vote, and the implementation of specific constitutional mandates, H.E. Rigathi Gachagua is no longer eligible to serve as Deputy Party Leader,” Mbarire stated.

Key constitutional references, namely Articles 75(3) and 145(7) of the Kenyan Constitution, combined with Article 8.2.19 of the UDA’s own constitution, necessitated the change. This framework led the NEC to formally appoint Deputy President Kindiki, effective immediately, in place of Gachagua.

Upon his appointment, Kindiki expressed commitment to President William Ruto’s vision for UDA and Kenya, emphasizing the need for cohesion within the party and unity across the nation. “I am honoured by the trust placed in me and am dedicated to advancing the party’s goals and serving all our members,” he remarked.

Kindiki further reflected on the significance of this transition, describing it as a critical juncture for the party. “These past weeks have been transformative as we navigated the constitutional and judicial processes that brought us to this point,” he noted, adding a sense of optimism about the road ahead.
