The Confraternity of Patients Kenya (Cofpak) has strongly condemned an alleged case of sexual assault involving a healthcare provider at a private hospital in Mombasa, Kenya. In a statement released on February 4, 2025, the patient advocacy group called for swift justice, a transparent investigation, and increased accountability in the healthcare sector.
“This egregious act is a grave violation of medical ethics, professional integrity, and the fundamental duty of care owed to patients,” Cofpak said in its statement.
The incident, which allegedly took place in a private medical facility, has sparked public outcry and renewed calls for stricter oversight of healthcare professionals. Cofpak emphasized the urgent need for authorities to act decisively, ensuring that the matter is handled with transparency and urgency.
Beyond seeking justice for the victim, Cofpak is advocating for structural reforms in healthcare regulation. The group has proposed the establishment of an independent disciplinary tribunal to handle misconduct cases involving medical professionals.
“The current regulatory bodies, such as the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and the Clinical Officers Council (COC), also serve as registration and licensing bodies, creating a potential conflict of interest,” the statement noted.
Cofpak argues that an autonomous tribunal would strengthen accountability, enhance patient protection, and uphold the integrity of Kenya’s healthcare system.
The call for reform comes amid growing concerns over patient safety and medical malpractice in Kenya, with critics arguing that existing structures often fail to hold medical professionals accountable.
As authorities launch investigations into the Mombasa hospital case, patient rights groups and civil society organizations continue to push for systemic change to protect vulnerable patients and uphold medical ethics.
