The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, originally set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to August 2025. The decision, announced on January 14, reflects the need for additional time to ensure that critical infrastructure meets the standards required for hosting the prestigious tournament.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed gratitude to the leadership of the host nations, including Kenya’s President William Ruto, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, for their commitment to the project. “I would like to express my deep gratitude to the Presidents for their leadership, commitment, and the good progress that has been made,” he stated.

Significant advancements have been made in the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training facilities, and other essential infrastructure in the three host nations. However, CAF’s technical and infrastructure experts, some of whom have been stationed in the host countries, advised that further time was necessary to ensure readiness. The statement emphasized, “More time is required to ensure that the infrastructure and facilities are at the levels necessary for hosting a successful CHAN.”

The rescheduled timeline aims to maintain the championship’s high standards. CAF will conduct the official draw for the tournament on January 15, 2024, in Nairobi, at 20:00 EAT. Details of the tournament’s commencement in August 2025 will be announced in due course.
