CA revokes 75 broadcasting licenses in 2024 over non-compliance

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) took decisive action in 2024 by revoking 75 broadcasting licenses for non-compliance with licensing conditions. The affected entities included television broadcasters, FM radio stations, a broadcast signal distributor, and subscription management services, with the revocations published in the Kenya Gazette between April and November 2024.

Of the 75 revoked licenses, 66 were due to regulatory non-compliance, while nine were voluntary terminations requested by broadcasters. Key names such as Econet Media (K) Ltd (operating Kwese TV), Kiss TV, Bamba TV, Switch TV, and KUSCCO FM were among those who voluntarily opted out.

Television broadcasters cited for non-compliance spanned across the country, representing a diverse mix of niche and regional channels, including Mwariama TV, Rescue TV, Kilimo TV, and Madgot TV. The CA also revoked licenses for radio stations such as Radio Luhya FM, Nacex FM, and Somal FM.

This regulatory move underscores the authority’s commitment to maintaining compliance and service quality in Kenya’s broadcasting sector. By tightening oversight, the CA aims to foster an environment that ensures broadcasters adhere to operational and licensing standards, preserving the integrity of the country’s media landscape.
