British American Tobacco appoints Waeni Ngea as company secretary

British American Tobacco Kenya plc (BAT Kenya) has appointed Waeni Ngea as the Company Secretary, effective from October 23, 2023.

Ngea re-joined the organization in July 2023, where she took on the role of Head of Legal & Compliance for East & Southern Africa. She brings significant experience in the areas of corporate governance and legal matters.

Her professional background includes a three-year tenure at Bamburi Cement plc, where she served as the Head of Legal & Compliance and Company Secretary. Prior to this, she was associated with BAT Kenya for six years, beginning in 2014, in the capacity of Head of Legal & Compliance and Company Secretary. Her experience also includes a role as Legal Counsel at Unilever Kenya Limited, providing legal support to the East Africa region.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. Additionally, Ngea is an accredited governance auditor and maintains membership in professional organizations such as the Law Society of Kenya, the Institute of Certified Secretaries, Kenya, and serves as a Council Member of the Association of Retirement Benefit Schemes (ARBS).

Ngea’s appointment is expected to reinforce BAT Kenya’s corporate governance and legal functions.  With her background and experience expected to play a crucial role in supporting the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities effectively.

Rita Kavashe, Chair of the Board, congratulated Ngea on her appointment and welcomed her back to BAT Kenya.

Concurrently, BAT Kenya has announced the resignation of Kathryne Maundu from her role as Company Secretary, effective from October 23, 2023. She held this position since June 2020 and has been acknowledged for her professionalism and expertise in supporting the Board’s governance responsibilities. The board expressed its appreciation to Ms. Maundu and extended best wishes for her future endeavours.
