Kenyan soccer star Victor Wanyama has made a comeback to the Kenyan national football team, Harambee Stars.
Speaking after holding talks with the footballer, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts Ababu Namwamba said the decision has been made to help revitalize Kenyan football.
“Am delighted Victor Wanyama has agreed to return fully to Harambee Stars, rescinding his earlier decision to exit the team. In our mission to rebuild our football and elevate our national teams, our elite players must be at the heart of this renaissance,” said the CS.
The veteran skipper retired from international football in 2021 after a fourteen-year stint that saw him captain Harambee stars in pursuit of silverware in Egypt in 2019.

“Growing up, it was always my dream to represent my country. With a great deal of pride, I can say that I have been fortunate to live my dream. From making my debut against Nigeria to captaining the team in the African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt, the past 14 years have gone beyond what I ever thought possible,” said Victor Wanyama in his retirement statement in 2021.
At the time of his retirement, Wanyama played for Major League Soccer club Montreal where he was signed on a free transfer after spending successful seasons at Celtic, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspurs.
Wanyama will leave his current club Montreal after the end of the season.
His recent move will greatly boost the morale of local players as the Kenya Kwanza government seeks to bring fresh hope into the ever-frail Harambee Stars.
Recently, the government approved a bid to have Kenya host the 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) competition.
