The Parliamentary Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs is scheduled to vet Abdi Ahmed Mohamud for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) next week. The vetting session will take place on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. in the Mini Chamber, County Hall, Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.
President William Ruto recently nominated Mohamud to succeed Twalib Mbarak, whose term as EACC CEO ends in January 2025.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, Parliament invited Kenyans to participate in the approval process by submitting their views on Mohamud’s suitability. “The memoranda may be forwarded to the Clerk of the National Assembly via P.O. Box 41842-00100, Nairobi, or delivered to the office at the Main Parliament Buildings,” the notice stated. Additionally, submissions can be sent via email to cna@parliament.go.ke by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 2, 2024.
All submissions must be in writing, sworn on oath, and supported by evidence.
Mohamud currently serves as the Deputy CEO of the EACC, where he oversees daily operations, including statutory, administrative, and policy functions. His extensive experience includes over a decade as Director of Investigations at the commission.
If approved, Mohamud will take over from Twalib Mbarak, who has held the position since January 2019. During his tenure, Mbarak spearheaded various initiatives aimed at combating corruption and promoting accountability in public service.
The nomination and vetting come at a time when the EACC plays a pivotal role in the fight against corruption in Kenya. The commission’s leadership is critical to maintaining public trust and ensuring the effective enforcement of anti-graft laws.
The vetting process provides an opportunity for Parliament and the public to scrutinize Mohamud’s qualifications and track record. The Justice and Legal Affairs Committee will consider public feedback before making its recommendations to the National Assembly.
The outcome of the vetting will determine whether Mohamud assumes the helm of the EACC, continuing its mandate to prevent and combat corruption across the country.
