President Uhuru Kenyatta has declared an increase of minimum wage by 12 percent with effect from May 1, 2022.

Speaking during the 2022 Labour Day celebrations, President Kenyatta said that the World Bank has indicated that Kenya will have the best productive workforce by 2036 if we continue with the same trajectory.

” I call on private sector, please let us work in the same spirit, let us all make the adjustments, that will sustain the wellness of our labour force, let us sacrifice a portion f our profit,” Uhuru said.

“Kenya is one of the few countries in the world that has cushioned its consumers against global fuel increase, our fuel price is among the lowest in the continent. The government has had to pay Ksh 29 a liter as a subsidy,” he said.

On the cost of fuel, President Kenyatta said the country’s fuel subsidy programme had ensured that Kenya maintained among the lowest pump prices in the world, and cautioned oil marketers against hoarding petroleum products.

At the same time, the President revisited the various measures taken by the Government to cushion Kenyans from the negative economic impacts of Covid-19 and regretted that the ongoing geopolitical conflict in eastern Europe involving Russia and Ukraine was slowing down the global economy’s recovery from the pandemic.

The President, who spoke at this year’s Labour Day Celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium, directed Labour and Social Protection CS Simon Chelugui to immediately gazette COTU’s representative on the NSSF Board of Trustees.
