Paris has taken a bold step towards sustainability by ingeniously tapping into its bustling metro system to generate clean energy. In a ground-breaking experiment, energy company Iberdrola, based in Paris, converted six turnstiles at the Miromesnil metro station into miniature turbines. The miniature turbines, shaped like wind turbines, were 3D printed using biodegradable corn starch-based materials and were created by students from the French engineering firm Junia.

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), this experiment ran for two days. As each passenger passed through these modified turnstiles, the turbines transformed their motion into kinetic energy and subsequently into electricity. In total, 27,000 passengers used the turnstiles, each generating approximately 0.2 watts of energy. Scientists suggest that scaling up this initiative could unlock even greater potential for green energy generation. If implemented across the entire metro system in France, which serves an estimated 1.5 billion passengers annually, this technology could generate a remarkable 136 megawatts per year, sufficient to power an entire subway line and save 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Could this invention be the key to a sustainable future? Research indicates that global renewable energy capacity increased significantly by nearly 10 percent last year. However, it must accelerate threefold by 2030 to effectively limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celcius or less. Beyond the metro system, this innovative technology has the potential to be integrated into various public infrastructures. Imagine the transformative impact of harnessing green energy at airports, train stations, corporate offices, and other crowded spaces. Each individual’s daily activities could contribute to renewable energy generation, embedding sustainable practices into our everyday lives.

As the world grapples with the consequences of climate change, innovations like Paris’s mini turbines offer hope for a sustainable future. Initiatives that empower individuals to participate in the energy transition through their daily activities are essential in shaping a greener world. The journey towards sustainability is a shared endeavour, and every small step brings us closer to our goal. Paris’s pioneering project, which harnesses green energy from everyday commutes through mini turbines in metro turnstiles, exemplifies the city’s unwavering commitment to sustainability. This innovative approach can inspire other cities to embrace similar practices, seamlessly integrating green energy solutions into their public infrastructures. With a collective shift in mindset and sustained support for such innovative designs, we can make green energy an intrinsic part of our daily lives and lay the groundwork for a more sustainable future for generations to come.
