On Wednesday, March 15, 2023, the World Food Programme (WFP) pledged 7 billion shillings in emergency aid to support the 940,300 people in ten counties of Kenya who are suffering from severe drought.

The food and money will be delivered through the Lisha Jamii (protect family) Phase II program between April and September, according to Lauren Landis, WFP’s country director for Kenya.

During the meeting, the WFP representative announced that 25 metric tons of wheat and 16 metric tons of sorghum will arrive at the Mombasa Port the following week.

“WFP has committed food and non-food items to support the GoK and other partners’ interventions to the famine, which has affected more than 5.3 million people in over 30 counties in the country; 25MT of wheat and 16MT of sorghum will be delivered to the country next week,” Gachagua said.

He asked for further collaboration in areas such as water delivery, livestock feeding, nutrition rations for youngsters and expecting and nursing women, and dialogue and peace-building in conflict zones.

Gachagua emphasized that providing food, including for schools, will not only save lives but also enable kids to learn rather than picking up firearms and indulging in rustling.
