Following an agreement between the Kenyan Government and Chinese traders, China Square resumed operations on Monday, March 6, 2023.

Customers were notified by China Square that it has resumed operations at Unicity along Thika Road in a statement.

In addition, the Kenya Chinese Chamber of Commerce (KCCC) applauded the Kenyan government’s decision to permit Chinese traders to restart business.

“We appreciate the positive news about China Square’s resumed operations. This comes after multiple meetings between the Kenyan government and the country’s Chinese community to find a peaceful way out of the impasse, according to the Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber also stated that they will continue to foster collaboration between the two countries in promoting Investments, Trade, and Tourism.

Following comments made by Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria on February 24, in which he indicated his intention to exclude Chinese vendors from the UniCity Mall, the commercial hub announced an indefinite closure on Sunday, February 26.

Kuria claimed that China Square would promote the arrival of Chinese traders who would capitalize on the chances that had been left open for Kenyans.

Lei Cheng, China Square owner had initially raised worries about his company’s closure. In his statement announcing the hub’s shutdown, he said that since the company’s opening on January 29, 2023, the hub has been unable to handle the heavy number of daily customer traffic.

Additionally, he noted that false claims made by customers on social media, as well as complaints about unpleasant shopping experiences, all contributed to the company’s closure.
