Less than a month after the controversial exit of former Safaricom Chair John Ngumi, a replacement has been made.

Arshed Khawaja is the new board chairman, whose appointment takes effect on Thursday, January 26.

Announcing his appointment, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Ndegwa praised the new appointee for his distinguished experience as an advocate for more than 30 years.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish to inform you that following a Board meeting earlier today, Adil Arshed Khawaja (MBS) has been elected as the Chairman of the Safaricom board effective today, Thursday, 26th January 2023,” said Ndegwa.

“As mentioned in my previous message when he joined the board, Adil is a distinguished Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 30 years of experience in the legal profession,”

“I take this opportunity to welcome Adil and wish him all the best as the Chairman of Safaricom PLC. I also look forward to working with Adil and the entire Board of Directors as we continue to transform lives and deliver for our customers, colleagues, community and company,”

Ngumi, a long-time Uhuru ally, left Safaricom early this year, barely six months after assuming office.

Although his exit was communicated as a resignation by the management of Safaricom, pundits termed the move as a change meant to align the telco giant with the new administration under President William Ruto.
