President William Ruto has promised a number of interventions to help address the welfare of police.

Speaking during a pass-out parade at Kiganjo Police Training College in Nyeri on January 10, the president said that his government is committed to ensuring that the working conditions of police are addressed to ensure effective service delivery by the crucial department.

One of the promises the president gave to the men in uniform was the actualization of comprehensive healthcare insurance coverage for all police officers and their families.

The head of state said this will be made possible through operationalizing fully equipped hospitals that will exclusively serve the members of the disciplined force and their loved ones.

“The hospitals will ensure that members of the police service finally have access to priority and appropriate facilities for physical and mental wellness,” said the president.

Additionally, Ruto promised that police uniforms will be given to all police officers for free by the government, a reversal of an earlier move to have junior officers pay for the attires.

“It is my expectation that these officers will be given quality uniforms which meet the standards for our policemen and women. The officers should wake up every morning knowing that the Government of Kenya stands behind them,” he said.

These two moves come in the backdrop of the swearing-in of the police reforms task force on January 9.

The Maraga-led task force was appointed by President Ruto to look into the working conditions of police and prison officers and recommend the necessary steps needed to improve those conditions.
