Deputy President Gachagua Donates KSH1M To Gikomba Fire Victims

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has donated KSh1 million to support traders who lost their stocks in yet another fire outbreak.

A part of the market caught fire at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2022, leaving traders counting their losses. The donations were presented by George Theuri, a political and youth affairs counselor in the Deputy President’s office.

The former Embakasi West Mp was accompanied by Charles Njagua, former Starehe Mp, and Gerald Irungu, former Ziwani MCA.

The fire was put out by the Nairobi County Fire and Disaster Team, resulting to injuries of one Samuel Njuguna, 23. Njuguna received immediate medical attention at Kenyatta National Hospital.

The annual fires that occur in Gikomba have occurred in the years 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2021.

On November 28, 2021, as Nairobi was experiencing heavy rain, traders wept in agony as yet another mystery fire destroyed goods of unknown value.

The outdoor market experienced a mysterious fire in February 2021 and another one in August. On April 10, 2019, a portion of the market was destroyed by fire, resulting in the demolition of more than 2,000 buildings.

There were three fire incidents at the market in 2018. When a portion of the market selling clothes and wood caught fire in June, injuring at least 60 people.
