IPO Access Is Reshaping Kenyan Investors’ Global Market Entry

For Kenyan retail investors, access to global equities has traditionally involved purchasing companies after their shares begin trading on secondary markets. The introduction of digital platforms that provide access to selected US initial public offerings (IPOs) is changing this model by allowing investors to participate closer to the primary issuance stage.

Hisa provides an example of this shift by enabling eligible Kenyan investors to discover and participate in selected US IPOs through its platform. Investors can therefore access shares at the offering stage rather than waiting for secondary-market trading to begin. This distinction is important because the IPO price can differ materially from the valuation established once trading starts.

The performance of recent US listings demonstrates this difference. Circle Internet Group priced its June 2025 IPO at USD 31.0 per share. Its stock opened at USD 69.0 on the New York Stock Exchange and closed its first trading day at USD 83.2, representing an increase of 168.5% from the IPO price. By contrast, CoreWeave priced its March 2025 IPO at USD 40.0 per share, opened at USD 39.0 on Nasdaq and closed its first trading day at USD 40.0.

These outcomes illustrate why primary-market access does not guarantee investment returns. The key consideration remains whether the IPO valuation appropriately reflects the company’s earnings potential, growth prospects and underlying risks. A strong business can still represent an unattractive investment when its entry valuation is excessive.

Access also does not guarantee full allocation. Strong demand can result in investors receiving fewer shares than requested or no allocation at all. Consequently, participation can depend on both investment analysis and the availability of shares.

For Kenyan investors, US IPO participation also introduces currency exposure. Returns measured in Kenyan shillings depend not only on movements in the underlying share price but also on changes in the USD/KES exchange rate.

The expansion of IPO access therefore broadens participation in global primary markets while increasing the analytical requirements for retail investors. Prospectuses, financial statements, use of proceeds, valuation and principal risks remain more important than initial trading momentum. IPO access changes when investors can enter a market, but it does not change the principles of disciplined investment analysis.
