BasiGo has announced plans to launch 100 electric vehicles after raising Ksh800 million in finance from Mobility54, Trucks VC, and Novastar Ventures.

The motor vehicle company announced that it had 100 reservations from different stakeholders in the country’s matatu industry.

To assist with the implementation of the scheme, BasiGo further stated that charging stations were also being rolled out in the city.

“The cash will enable the company to start commercial delivery of locally produced electric buses and charging infrastructure under the company’s distinctive pay-as-You-Drive finance model. BasiGo’s Pay-As-You-Drive approach allows owners to purchase an electric bus for a similar upfront cost to a diesel bus,” BasiGo said in a statement.

The lease of the E-Bus battery, charging at BasiGo charge stations, and thorough servicing and maintenance are all included in the model’s subscription price of Ksh20 per kilometre paid by operators. The first 15 vehicles are scheduled to launch in January 2023 as the fleet is introduced.

“To support this larger fleet, BasiGo has already started to place high-power, DC fast-charging stations in key areas of Nairobi. All buses that are delivered in 2023 would be domestically produced in Kenya,” according to the firm, said

By the end of 2025, the corporation hopes to have deployed 1,000 cars, with other nations also expected to gain from this.

“In the future, when we begin delivering to customers operating routes outside of Nairobi, we will expand the reach of our charging network beyond the city,” BasiGo CEO Jit Bhattacharya stated.

Following fleet operations with Citi Hoppa and East Shuttle, the company has transported 140,000 passengers since beginning operations in March.
