Speaker of the National Assembly  Moses Wetangula has hinted at the possibility of direct flights between Tokyo and Nairobi.

In a statement after holding talks with the Japanese Ambassador to Kenya on Monday, November 14, at parliament buildings, Wetangula said the envoy had fronted the idea to boost transit between the two countries.

“The envoy, who has been serving in the nation since December 2021, stated that he is looking into the possibility of starting direct flights between Tokyo and Nairobi,” Wetangula said.

Wetangula and Okaniwa also spoke about other important topics that will benefit Kenya and significantly boost the country’s economy.

“We discussed a variety of topics, such as the manufacturing sector, climate change, waste management practices, and the Japan-Kenya technical skills and experience exchange program.”

Wetangula and Okaniwa’s meeting comes days after Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua and Japan’s Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa met on Friday, November 4.

Following the conclusion of the eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8), Yoshimasa declared during the meeting that Japan and Kenya have confirmed to strive for continued development of bilateral relations.

“Japan continues to be a steadfast partner in development & it was, therefore, a pleasure to discuss our plans with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi. We agreed on the way forward to transform the lives of our people & enhance international peace and stability,” Dr Mutua noted.
